About the studio

The person carrying the cameras should make the room feel easier.

Arden Vale Studio is led by Iris Calder. Two photographers, one way of working, and celebrations covered from the first quiet hour of preparation to the last of the night.

We started the studio to photograph whole celebrations, not the portrait hour.

Iris trained as a documentary photographer and spent six years on editorial assignments before the first wedding. Arden Vale began in 2016, after a two-day celebration in the Alentejo where the parts nobody had planned — a kitchen full of aunts, a thunderstorm, a band that would not stop — turned out to be the parts worth keeping.

The studio is two photographers. Iris leads every celebration and edits every gallery; Tomas covers the second angle, the rooms Iris is not in, and the hours either side of the ceremony. Nobody is subcontracted in. You meet the people who will be there on the day.

We take a limited number of celebrations a year, most of them outside Portugal. That number is deliberate: it keeps the planning unhurried, the travel properly scouted, and the edit finished before the next date arrives.

How we work a room:
wide first, then close.

We read the whole space before we photograph anyone in it. Where the light falls at six, which doorway everyone uses, where the noise is going to be.

The room an hour before the doors open, walked twice and measured for light.
Wide
Most of the day is spent close and quiet, waiting rather than arranging.
Near
By the evening we move with the room instead of around it.
Evening

If you notice us more than you notice each other, we have done the job badly.

Photography

Four things we hold to, on every celebration.

Direction where it helps. No direction where it would flatten the thing that is already happening.

Direction

Portraits and family groups are planned, not improvised. We give clear, short instructions — where to stand, which way to walk, when to stop — and then get out of the way. Nobody is asked to pose for longer than the picture needs.

Documentary moments

Everything outside the portrait hour is photographed as it happens. We do not restage a first look, ask for the bouquet toss again, or move a grandmother for a better background. If it happened once, that is the frame you get.

Place

Where a celebration happens is part of what happened. We arrive the day before, photograph the venue in the light you will actually have, and keep the town, the weather and the drive in the edit alongside the people.

Atmosphere

Colour is left as it was in the room. No filters, no film emulation, no fashionable wash applied to a whole gallery. Warm rooms stay warm, late nights stay dark, and the edit is consistent from the first frame to the last.

Practical notes

Where we are, and how we work with you.

The answers couples ask for first, before anything about style.

A few things that have nothing to do with weddings.

Iris lives in Lisbon with a greyhound called Pip and a kitchen that is too small for the number of people usually in it. She swims most mornings, cooks for far too many at the weekend, and still shoots one roll of film a month that nobody sees.

Tomas is from Porto, cycles everywhere, and is the reason the studio owns three umbrellas per bag. Between celebrations we drive to places we have not photographed yet and eat lunch somewhere with plastic chairs.

If you are planning something and want to talk it through before committing to anything, we are happy to have that conversation. Most of our couples become people we stay in touch with.

The edit continues long after the celebration.
